Phonics

At St Charles’ CVA we teach Phonics through Read, Write, Inc. Teaching Phonics is daily is an effective way in teaching young children to read and write.

By the end of Year One pupils are expected to pass the Phonics screening and we follow the teaching sequence of RWI phonics which enables children to receive consistent and high quality teaching of early reading.

All pupils in Key Stage One have two reading books. One reading book is based on their Phonics knowledge and the second reading book is based upon their level of fluency and understanding of the text.

As pupils progress into Key Stage Two phonics teaching is embedded and the pupils follow the Read, Write, Inc programme for spellings.

Our Phonics Lead and Key Stage 1 Reading Lead is Mr Wakefield.
