At St Charles’ CVA we aim to ensure each year group develops a deep understanding of an aspect of the National Curriculum.

Reception

  • To be introduced to singing and developing an appreciation for music and dance.
  • Sing songs and experiment with ways of changing them.

Year 1

  • Revisit knowledge from previous year.
  • To play tuned or untuned instruments musically.
  • Listen with concentration and understanding.
  • Experiment with, create, select and combine sound.

Year 2

  • Revisit knowledge from previous year.
  • To use their voices expressively and creatively.

Year 3

  • Revisit knowledge from previous year.
  • To develop an understanding of the history of music.

Year 4

  • Revisit knowledge from previous year.
  • To play and perform in solo and ensemble context using their voices.
  • improvise and compose music for a range of purposes.

Year 5

  • To play and perform in sols and ensemble context using their voices and playing musical
  • instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression.
  • Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes.
  • Use a understand staff and other musical notations.

Year 6

  • To appreciate and understand a wide range of high quality, live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians.

Music at our school

We are proud of the musical opportunities and experiences we offer our pupils. In Year 3 all pupils learn how to play the violin. We also offer guitar, flute and tin whistle lessons. We offer pupils the opportunity to play a range of instruments which include tin whistles, recorders,guitar, flute, cello and piano lessons.

Teachers also use the Charanga programme to teach music to our pupils.

Charanga – We deliver our music curriculum through Charanga and the Derbyshire Music Partnership.
